Getting baby portraits around 2-4 months is a great time as they are starting to hold their heads up for longer periods of time, along with plenty of first smiles and giggles. This gives you more variety in poses as well as for interactive moments with siblings!sibling and baby portraitssibling portraitsbaby portraits

What to wear for our family portrait session? We get this question time and time again so we thought it was timely to get those questions answered in a blog post!

The first question most people ask is: Should we all wear matching outfits such as jeans and a white shirt? We usually reply by saying it’s important to think about coordinating your outfits but not needing to match all your clothes so everyone looks the same.

family portraitChoose 1-3 colours for your group portrait, ones with similar tones that go nicely together and have everyone work within that colour palette. That way, the photo is unified because the colours all work harmoniously and they don’t distract either.

Here are our top tips

  • Dress to the occasion and season
eg. If you’re having a beach session, don’t dress in formal wear with heavy make up. Wear light, breezy, summer clothes.
  • Eclektic_20130712_0291Smart casual clothing always looks best but of course we want you to comfortable and confident in what you wear so that it shows who you are. Neutral colours like white, grey, cream, black and denims always work and don’t date.  Patterns are okay in moderation but try to limit it to one or two people wearing patterns. The same goes with stripes and large logos.

Textured (ruffles, buttons, jeans, knits, wool) look great in Autumn and Winter.Eclektic_20100802_1371Layered clothing with textures works well for the cooler months.

Bright colours and accesories are great for young children and can add a lovely pop to your photographs!

  • Consider your home decor
Consider where your portrait may hang in your home as it may influence your choice of colours that you wear. This will also influence your framing choices too.

  • Shoes
Wear shoes that match your outfits and guys pay attention to the socks you wear too as they might be visible! (no bright white socks!) If your shoes are not practical for walking around you may consider bringing a pair of flats to slip on and off throughout the shoot.
  • Hair
If getting a haircut or new hairdo, make your appointment at least 2 weeks prior to your portrait session – again this seems like a no brainer but you’d be surprised! Fresh hair cuts rarely look their best the same or next day. Allow some time to live with your new look before your portrait session.
  • Accessories not only add to your outfit but they can be a fun way to personalise your photos. e.g. Fruit, necklaces, hats, scarves, flowers.

  • How about ask the kids to bring some props along such as one of their favourite items to play with whether it is their favourite book or ukelele! This can be a beautiful way to remember them at the age they are at.

  • Think Timeless
You want to be able to look back on your photos in several years time and be able to enjoy them and not think- “I can’t believe that was trendy back then…” Trends always come and go. It is therefore important that you dress in a classic and timeless fashion so that your photos will never age.
  • BE YOURSELVES!
As much as these are guidelines to help you decide what to wear we don’t want to stifle your personality. Quite the contrary, it is your personality we want to bring out and shine! If you have a crazy idea for a particular look or theme that you want then by all means go for it! Wear what reflects your personalities and shares the story of your family. What matters at the end of the day is that you and your children are comfortable with how you look together. We encourage you to bring a change of clothes just in case of any mishaps, spills or accidents on the way. This will also allow you to have a greater variety and looks to your photos if we need a wardrobe change.

Lastly, a cool site to check out is Polyvore – to help create a board of outfit ideas and looks.

You may have seen a sneak peek collage we posted on our facebook page recently. Everyone seemed to love the photos and I suspect it was because of this beautiful white German Shepherd named Oakley. Check out the fun we had with this gorgeous couple at their Centennial Park engagement shoot!

Dunbar House Watson’s Bay was the perfect location for Jo + Josh’s wedding reception. Overlooking Sydney Harbour, Dunbar House affords amazing water views looking back towards the city. Jo + Josh’s wedding reception felt intimate but not cramped at Dunbar House.

Dunbar House is conveniently located to close to Camp Cove which is a favourite photo location of ours. We’d been wanting to take a bride and groom to the top of South Head for a while and were so stoked that Jo + Josh readily agreed to take on the challenge of walking up there. From the top, there is the most amazing view of the Sydney harbour and skyline.

Enjoy this gallery of images from Jo + Josh’s Dunbar House wedding reception below.  Make sure to check out their exit photo… it was one of our favourites from the day.
